The True Story, by kathy.nau on August 13, 2005
The author's daughter was my very dearest friend. I traveled to Middleburg many weekends to experience the hunt at Eglinton and the countryside. What wonderful memories of Jane and Mia. I am curious as to the disposition of Eglinton, and the location of Steven and Christopher. When did Jane pass away? The book, Portion of Foxes is a magnificent tribute to the family and deserves many rereads to fully absorb the second and third level character portrayals.
excellent read, by lilitiger2 on January 22, 2005
I love this book, have probably read it 500 times in the last 30 years or so, as previous reviewer commented, character names and dialog very funny, very horsey, no longer live in VA but really found this a wonderful book, one of my complete favorites. Long, but engrossing, commentary on issues like desegregation (one character, who is horribly prejudied and won't sit near an African AMerican woman is "all for Indians" because they don't live locally) as well as lots of horsey lifestyle stuff. Enjoy!
A Portion For Foxes, by omegafarms on April 13, 2004
The first time I read this book, I was a member of a hunt club, and it took the entire membership by storm. I still laugh at the impossible names of the characters, Cozy-Rosie Dudley Smythe, et al, and the hunt ball gave me stitches so bad I couldn't ride for a week! Almost. Plus, it's very horsey, has what were then, very controversial depictions of the desegregation of their town, and some very likeable, as well as some VERY unlikeable, characters, all memorable. I havent read it in 30 years, and still can recall most of it. And I read a LOT! Enjoy!
