Horse connection:
(racing) Julie Krone was the first female jockey to win a triple crown race.

Description:
Julie Krone decided to be a jockey when women weren't supposed to be jockeys. It's hard for a tiny woman to be taken seriously by people on the track, but Krone's skill and persistance won her a place with them, and eventually made her the most successful female jockey to date.

The book covers Krone's childhood in Eau Clare, MI, and finishes with her return to the track after a very serious 1993 accident. In addition to being an account of her life, it also includes some of young Julie's writings from school - where it is clear that despite the grammar and spelling mistakes, a very bright young mind shines through. There is plenty of self-criticism in here as well.

The book, co-written with Nancy Ann Richardson, is engaging and very readable.
