My Friend Flicka
Mary O'Hara
Horse connection:
(western) Young boy and horse grow up together
Description:
My Friend Flicka is a true classic. Much better than the film version, the book is a complex character study and coming-of-age tale. The details of ranch life, the connections to military riding, and the personalities of the horses are all tightly drawn. A really wonderful book.

| This book, a classic, is completely and utterly different from the 2006 film. The 1943 film is based on the book and while it also does not do justice to Mary O'Hara's novel, it was at least able to keep the main character a boy (played by young Roddy McDowall) and the filly a chestnut. |
