Riding Lessons
Sara Gruen
Horse connection:
(jumping) Former Olympic contender returns to horses
Description:
RIDING LESSONS features an Olympic-level equestrienne who suffers a devastating accident that ends both her career and the life of her beloved horse. It also sets off a chain of events that doesn't climax until twenty years later, when her husband leaves her, she loses her job, and she discovers that her estranged father is dying. In an attempt to pick up the pieces, Annemarie returns to her parents' riding academy with her intransigent teenage daughter. When a mysterious striped horse shows up at a local rescue center, Annemarie slides into an obsession that threatens to destroy her tenuous relationship with her parents, their life's work, and her sanity.

| The horse details in this book are inconsistent and not terribly realistic, but I could have lived with that if I'd enjoyed the rest of the story. However, the main character has to be one of the least likeable protagonists ever invented. She's a borderline alcoholic, racist, completely self-centered, and a bad mother (although she does try, and improves at the end of the story). It makes it hard to care about the story when you don't care about the characters. |

| I enjoyed this book since it was fairly accurate in most cases-isn't ALL fiction a bit far fetched sometimes! Good story line wiht likeable characters. |
