Gaudenzia, Pride of the Palio
Marguerite Henry
Horse connection:
The Palio is an ancient traditional horse race held on the city streets of Siena, Italy
Description:
Young Giorgio, a peasant boy of the Maremma, worked a small farm with his father. He has always had a special connection with animals, and he dreams of riding in the Palio, a horse race held twice a year on the cobblestone streets of Siena, Italy since the middle ages. It began as the commemmoration of the Victory of Montaperti. The rules and traditions of the race are ancient and unusual - it is as much a political battle as a horse race - and Henry's account does a wonderful job of immersing the reader in this bit of culture. It is the true story of Giorgio and the special half-Arabian mare Farfalla, who comes to be known as Gaudenzia.
