A Horse Called Mystery
Marjorie Reynolds
Horse connection:
(kid with pony) Owlie rescues a lame horse
Description:
Owlie had saved $40 from his paper route last summer and was looking forward to buying a shiny new bicycle when Mr. Hammond tells him he's planning to sell the new bay horse that he's just bought for $40 and is now lame for meat. Owlie is horrified, and though he knows practically nothing about horses, he buys the horse on the spot, without much thought about where or how he will keep it.
The horse story is the main focus of the book, but the setting and surrounding characters are unusual. Owlie wears oversized glasses that gave him his nickname and he has a limp. The town is a quiet coastal village, and Owlie frequently rides along the beach. Owlie's mother is a deaf-mute, and the doctor that Owlie's father works for has recently suffered from terrible burns after rescuing a patient from a burning building. It's a nice story, of hurts mental and physical, fitting in and not.
