Banker
Dick Francis
Horse connection:
(racing) An expensive champion Thoroughbred is siring deformed foals
Description:
When Tim Ekaterin's bank is approached to lend 5 million pounds to purchase the champion stallion Sandcastle and retire him to stud, it is Tim who is assigned to check out the stallion, the borrower, and the farm before recommending approval. All seems fine until the first foals arrive, with grotesque deformities - missing limbs, missing eyes, or stillborn - and suddenly the future of the stallion, the farm, and the bank's loan is dramatically in doubt.

| Francis' books are always solid - well researched, good story (albeit somewhat predictable), cleanly written - and this is one of my favorites. Francis can even make bankers and banking into interesting characters and backdrops. |
