This series has definitely evolved into a nice bit of writing. This is the 6th book in the Gail McCarthy series, after Slickrock, and instead of following the tried and true formulaic mystery where amateur sleuth goes where she has no business, this book spends more time on Gail and her life. I appreciated the time spent on her depression, on the "this is all I ever wanted and I have it now and why aren't I happy" phase in life, and her feelings about the days she fights it and the days she doesn't , and towards the idea of getting professional help.

The mystery ends up feeling very natural, and Gail's involvement isn't stupid or contrived. An excellent bit of popcorn reading.
