Carlota
Scott O'Dell
Horse connection:
(western) Carlota is a Californio, and rides as well as any vaquero
Description:
Sixteen year old Carlota de Zubarán is the apple of her father's eye, growing up in southern California in the 1800. Her Spanish father owns an enormous ranch, and so there is much to be done: gathering cattle, riding to town for supplies, defending against theft. Carlota, against the wishes of her grandmother, Doña Dolores, rides a black stallion, Tiburón, and astride at that. She loves her horses, and she loves riding.
The novel covers the mid 1800s, when America and Mexico were skirmishing over the fate of California, and when gold was suddenly found at Sutter's Mill.
| Excellent way to bask in California history, by ponydom on February 16, 2008 |
| I enjoyed this novel, set in a key period in California history, for the immersion it gave me in the world of the old Californio horsemen. Carlota is a horsewoman, who appreciates her fine stallion and is always looking for better mares for their herds. Her story is based in part on the life of a real young woman who participated in the battle of San Pascual. |
