| When Maya arrives in Wyoming, she is scarred, guarded, and green, with little experience outside of her Grandmother's stifling grasp. She loves horses, and has learned all about them when Grandmother wasn't looking - but only from books. At 11, she is surprised by how big a horse is close up. The characters are interesting and three dimensional. Maya's Aunt Vi - wrangler during the summer, art history professor during the main part of the year - names all of the horses for famous painters, including our main horse character, the pinto mare Artemisia. There is a lot of sadness in this book, but it is finely written and the end is satisfying and worth the journey. It is good to see some strong, new, original horse fiction coming from Scholastic Press again, as good as the books I remember growing up with. |
